Connect compatible Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 equipment to a supported Thunderbolt 3-equipped Mac with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. It bridges the two Thunderbolt connector formats, helping you keep supported external storage, docks, and other Thunderbolt peripherals in your workspace.
Connect Thunderbolt Equipment
Thunderbolt 3 connector: Uses a USB-C-shaped connector on the computer side.
Thunderbolt 2 port: Accepts a suitable Thunderbolt cable for connecting compatible Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 equipment.
Bidirectional support: Can also connect supported Thunderbolt 3 devices to a compatible Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 Mac, subject to device, power, and software requirements.
Compact adapter: A convenient bridge between supported generations of Thunderbolt equipment.
Thunderbolt Compatibility Matters
The USB-C-shaped plug requires a supported Thunderbolt connection; an ordinary USB-C port does not establish compatibility. Likewise, Thunderbolt 2 uses the same connector shape as Mini DisplayPort, but this adapter is not a Mini DisplayPort display adapter. It does not support ordinary Mini DisplayPort monitors, including the Apple LED Cinema Display.
Power and Setup Requirements
This is a Thunderbolt connectivity adapter, not a laptop power adapter or charging converter. Connected equipment may require its own external power source. Check your Mac model, operating system, peripheral compatibility, and cable requirements before purchasing. Transfer performance depends on the complete setup and the capabilities of the connected Thunderbolt equipment.
